The Internal Affairs Department is deploying an additional 425 staff and extending the opening hours of the country's busiest entry offices during the holiday season to cope with the growing number of travelers entering and leaving the country.

Deputy Minister Fatima Chohan told reporters that the ministry was ready to handle the increase in traffic, especially in air and land ports. Chohan said that the holiday season, which officially started from December 5 to January 9, 2019, has intensified movements between entry points and the demand for home affairs services, including pbadport applications. .

Chohan addressed reporters in the place of the newly appointed Interior Minister, Siyabonga Cwele, who was taking part in the debate deferred to the National Assembly on the bill to amend the electoral legislation .

The holiday season, with Easter and school holidays, is the high season at the national borders.

Chohan said that during the 2017-18 holiday season, a total of 8,468,262 movements were captured, including arrivals and departures of South African citizens and foreigners.

Of this number, 2,304,449 were citizens' movements and 6,163,813 were movements of foreigners.
