Inter-tribal relations have not been good recently. The presidential tiff resulted in Bangwato being accused of tribal fanaticism and false claims to national leadership.
It was not a totally undeserved accusation. We shouted about the withdrawal of the first president from the Ten Pula. I was too young to notice it, but I am told that villagers from Mahalapye have revolted.
From distant memory, I remember my father and his friends talking about the change with indignation. In the early 1980s in Gammangwato, it was common to make fun of Masire's totem; the hyena. When we were little, we had a bit of cadence that we sang while playing. It was a cadenza charged with two questions;
"A ke nnete?
A little morena Modimo, Masire o bina phiri?
It was simply a matter for God if it were really true that the second president, who had removed our leader from the Ten Pula notes, had a hyena as a totem – a Bangwato animal badociated with everything that was decaying and witchcraft. Tribal superiority was indirectly struck from an early age. Well, we were not alone, I guess. I know such a sectarian tribal group, whose members react violently when challenged. I do not know if they were singing similar rates. I'm talking about general observations. I know that all members of the tribe are not tribal.
Some say that we must definitively set the Constitution to achieve tribal parity. The solution is really simpler. We must remove all constitutional tribal references. The question of cultural or tribal equality would then become justiciable. Tribal equality can then be decided through the lens of a neutral Constitution. The courts can define the case law and the law on inter-tribal relations, not the parliament. The recognition of tribes in the Constitution is not an imperative. I digress.
The Motswana-wa-Sekei issue concerns equal economic opportunity as opposed to human equality. The question of whether Batswana-ba-Sekei should have a special place in economic policy. The surge in foreign direct investment has opened up the country's economy to people seeking opportunities in all their forms. Some are really good people and are only looking for a chance to make money while helping the country to grow. Some are just economic thugs seeking to exploit our economy without contributing anything. Retailers of Asian origin are well represented in this category. Among them are Caucasian men and women from the hotel sector who are paid in
Europe to exploit the economy of Botswana. Some are only drug traffickers and thieves. The government must purge our country of variegated variety. They fly Batswana-ba-Sekei. Let us throw them away?
The BDP government has granted Batswana ba Sekei overtime. They have been sedating with FAP, SMME, the Young Farmers Fund, among others, while the real economic opportunities that could make billionaires have been shared with immigrant economic pirates. This must be corrected.
I agree that the coinage "Batswana-ba-Sekei" does not appear in law books. But this country is not a global property that must be claimed and then abused by any vagrant. He has proud owners. Batswana-ba-Sekei – indigenous citizens. By "aboriginal citizens", I mean those whose parents (maternal or paternal, or both) did not have to apply for citizenship, regardless of their color or ancestry.
I remain convinced that economic policy should focus on Batswana ba Sekei as a specific objective. Good luck if you think I will excuse myself someday for that. The president is right. Look where we are because of all the absurd tricks of globalization and economic liberalization and the overly romantic notion of citizenship. I am told that a man owns a land of Botswana almost as big as Lesotho. Ninety-five percent of it must be expropriated. Botswana-ba-Sekei, in the north-east of the country, have no land because a foreign-owned enterprise owns part of a district. Batswana-ba-Sekei plays no role in the diamond sector, the main source of foreign exchange. Batswana-ba Sekei must claim its inheritance and rights over its lands and economic opportunities. By the way, Brexit is actually a Makgoa-a-Sekei project. They stood up to defend their island nation. They do not want land and economic displacement. I do not blame them.
I welcome and greet in particular all the naturalized workers who have taken up residence in our country and those who work hard for their economic emancipation. One day you will be Batswana ba Sekei. Some are already qualified and there are many. On the other hand, I hate the favored people who have converted areas of our country into racist reservations and despise aboriginal citizens.
Those whose children will not serve in the army or the police will end up in police stations, shouting that the country is not safe. Those who think that their O'Mangs are nothing more than laissez-pbader for citizens reserve reserved offers and economic opportunities for which they have no role to play but have every interest in exploiting
