Rossi was only 17 years old on the first day of the post-season practice in Jerez. Although he suffered a mechanical failure when he was carrying new tires, the Italian said that his pace was not as fast.
Yamaha brought two new engines for both tests to Valencia and Jerez, but Rossi felt that neither one nor the other was "the improvement we need".
"The problem is that for me, we are not taking a big step," said Rossi. "When I ride a bike, the problems are more or less the same.
"In the general clbadification, I am very retrograde because I have a problem with my new tire, so I do not do the attack time but other than that, if you focus on the pace, it is the most important for me, we are not very fast.
"The best players go faster than us The problem is not to make the right choice [of the two engines]the problem is that anyway, one or the other is not the improvement we need. That's my idea. "
Rossi added that the problems related to the bike, including the degradation of the tires, have not been solved and that Yamaha is slower than Ducati and Suzuki with the used tires.
"[With] the new tire we are fast, Maverick is very fast, also Franco [Morbidelli] is fast. After a few laps, all Ducati and Suzuki have a better pace.
"If we participate in tomorrow's race, we are fifth, sixth, seventh, or even fourth there is a fall in front, but we are not fighting for victory."
Rossi believes Yamaha's situation is similar to last year when the team was also struggling to make the bike competitive, but said it was too early to predict 2019 would be a repeat of 2018.
Yamaha had its longest winless streak in the 2018 season, with Maverick Vinales finally ending the drought that led to the win at Phillip Island, marking the team's only win for the season. season.
"It is very early to say, we do not have, as you said, just the engine.
"We also have other areas that are so important that you can work with changes also during the season, so we hope we can improve."
