DA leader Mmusi Maimane called on the government to secure all border posts to reduce crime in South Africa.

"We must secure our borders and repair our barriers, we must make it almost impossible for the illegal entry of people into the country," said Maimane.

Drug-related crime has increased at the border post over the past 10 years, he said.

Customs officers confiscated narcotics for nearly 80 million rand.

Referring to the incident, Maimane said, "A big part of the problem is that our borders are so easy to cross illegally."

He said, having safer border crossings would also eliminate corruption, adding that harsher penalties should be imposed on those found guilty.

"We must make a clear distinction between legal immigration and illegal immigration, we must make the process for those who wish to enter legally and simply, and we must do all we can to attract workers qualified. "
