African Commonwealth Games 100m champion Akani Simbine won the bronze medal on the first day of the IAAF Diamond League Series on Saturday, writes MARK ETHERIDGE

Simbine finished 9.94sec behind American Ronnie Baker (9.90) and local athlete Zharnell Hughes (9.93).

Simbine was timed after riding 0.01 seconds earlier in the previous round, better result for the Pretoria athlete.

The Olympic athlete and Commonwealth Games, Lebogang Shange, reached a South African record at the 3,000-meter run.

Exchange broke a path at 10 minutes 47.08 seconds. This is the second best time in the history of Briton Tom Bosworth who broke a world record 10: 43.84

Wenda Nel, bronze medalist at the Commonwealth Games, was also in the game. She took fifth place in the 400m hurdles in 55.67sec while American Shamier Little won in 53.95.

The only other woman SA in action was Commonwealth Games medalist Sunette Viljoen in the javelin where she finished sixth with a record of 60.34m. Hungarian Huihui Lyu won with 65.54 points

and Paralympic para-athlete Rio Nando Mahlangu

. He started in the T61 200m final and won the gold medal in 23.56 seconds.
