The creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, Stephen Hillenburg, died at the age of 57, confirmed Nickelodeon, who had broadcast the hugely popular cartoon series since 1999. In a statement, the company said the death of Hillenburg Monday was due to a motor neuron disease (also known as ALS) – an illness that he revealed was diagnosed in March 2017, the BBC reported. He not only created the character, but Hillenburg also directed the movie "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" of 2004.

"We are sad to share the news of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants," tweeted Nickelodeon from his official account.

The company statement added: "Steve conferred on SpongeBob SquarePants a sense of unique humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of children and families around the world. .

"His completely original characters and Bikini Bottom's universe will long recall the value of optimism, friendship and unlimited power of imagination."
