Tanzanian athletes leave for the African Games

Athletes were selected from sports disciplines, namely sailing, beach volleyball and athletics, and received the national flag in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

The Algerian Games will serve as qualifiers for the Youth Olympic Games to be held this year from 6 to 18 October in Argentina.

The contingent of Tanzania for the Algeria Games includes sailor Hamis Mhidini, who is under coach Mwambao Helef, athletes Regina Mpigachai and Francis Damiano, under coach Mwinga Mwanjala.

Beach volleyball athletes are Japhet Iwene and Kathumu Matola, led by coach Yusuf Mkalambati. Mwera Chegera is the head of the delegation.

At the flag ceremony, Tanzanian Olympic Committee (TOC) General Secretary Filbert Bayi urged athletes to work hard for their country. He said that Tanzania expects a lot from the athletes.

Bayi said that his committee had not organized a home camp for athletes related to Algeria because most of them are students.

However, he stated that OCD covered all accommodation costs and allowances for the athletes, their coaches and the head of the delegation.

"You go to Algeria as representatives of Tanzanians, work hard there, the county expects a lot from you," he said.

The All Africa Youth Games are organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and were held in Botswana in 2014, where Tanzania sent athletes swimming, athletics and football

At the Gaborone event, Tanzanian athletes John Churi and Dorcas Boniface qualified for took place on August 16 and 28 of the same year.
