South Africa's borders with neighboring countries are in a sordid state, hampering the fight against illegal immigration and transnational criminal activities.
This was revealed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) during a tour of South African border posts. In an official recognition report written by DA's spokesperson on immigration, Jacques Julius, revelations about the inefficacy of border control account for the influx of illegal immigrants and immigrants. the prevalence of criminal syndicates in several countries.
The Democratic Alliance's Border Tour
Julius reports that, along with his support team, he has embarked on a tour of South Africa's borders to better understand the issues facing gateways in the country. The team is focused on three main border control points:
- Border of Beit Bridge – Limpopo / Zimbabwe
- Manguzi Border – KwaZulu-Natal / Mozambique
- Skilpadshek Border – North West / Botswana
During their inspections at the above-mentioned border points, the team met with the South African National Defense Forces (SANDF) personnel responsible for patrolling and monitoring the areas. In general, if the soldiers are doing their best, with the few resources they have, a glaring lack of infrastructure has left South Africa very open to bordering countries.
At the border of the Beit Bridge near Musina in Limpopo, the team discovered that much of the border fence had been cut off – a real open goal for those hoping to cross illegally. From a close perspective of an automatic gate, the team could identify people who are studying the best time and the best place to move from Zimbabwe. These many points of view reveal SANDF patrol movements.
On the border of Manguzi, SANDF officials lamented the lack of adequate infrastructure, saying the fences were in urgent need of repair. Border guards also said watchtowers, infrared equipment and drones would help fight illegal immigrants and criminal organizations.
Near the Manguzi border, communities told the team how they had been terrorized by Mozambican car hijacking syndicates. It is alleged that law enforcement officials disagree with the criminals.
The Democratic Alliance promises to secure borders
The DA investigation team also learned that foreigners were crossing the border to collect social badistance in South Africa before returning to their homes in neighboring countries. The DA noted that this exploitation of benefits for South African citizens was a matter of serious concern.
At the Skilpadshek border, the team was informed of areas along the planned patrol route that SANDF staff could no longer access. The barrier guarding this border post is a modest agricultural hurdle – easily bypbaded and not very dissuasive.
Following their visit to the border, the AD decides to strengthen the defenses around South Africa's access points. The DA said that if it came to power, it would implement a four-step plan to immediately tackle the issues of illegal immigration and international criminal syndicates:
- Stop, detain and expel those who repeatedly enter our country illegally
- Ensure that undocumented immigrants are regularized or badisted to leave the country if they do not meet the criteria for staying in the country.
- Strengthen our border posts. With proper control and order, we can create effective and non-corrupt border security and control.
- Eradicate endemic corruption and inefficiency in internal affairs.
