The Italian economic crisis has affected nutrition

A new study shows that the long Italian economic crisis has an impact on nutritional health in the country, synonymous with the Mediterranean diet.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, in an index presented on Wednesday, ranked Italy eighth among the 12 Mediterranean countries studied for their nutritional health.

This was largely due to childhood obesity: 21% of Italian children aged 6 to 10 years were at risk. Other factors include poor nutrition education and the growing popularity of fast food restaurants.

The study, funded by the Barilla Foundation, indicated that the increase in the percentage of people living in poverty since the financial crisis of 2008-2009 was probably at the origin of the low ranking: 29% against 14% in France.
