William and Kate sent flowers to the elderly widow – and hope to visit her at the hospital to apologize.

Irene Mayor, 83, was thrown into the air by the impact and landed awkwardly.

She was taken to hospital by air ambulance and was critical but stable Tuesday night with a broken pelvis and other injuries.

The bicycle that struck Irene was a police officer who was cleaning up traffic in front of the couple's motorcade as she headed for Windsor for a Knights of the Garter ceremony.

One witness said, "Her bike hit her and she flip-flopped and collapsed to the ground.

"The officer was devastated. But he was going to the wrong side of the road. It could have been so much worse. "

It is understood that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also "devastated" at the time of the accident. They did not learn until after they arrived in Windsor.

They sent flowers to the Mayor on Tuesday with a handwritten note expressing their sorrow.

They told her daughter Fiona that they would like to visit her if she feels up to it.

Fiona, who lives with her mother 300 meters from the crash site in East Sheen, West London, said: "She has many injuries. They keep it stable for the moment.

A member of Kate and William's team visited Fiona on Tuesday.

The royal couple was in a Range Rover with at least four motorcycle riders and two other cars while they were heading to Windsor on Monday afternoon.

The photos of the accident show a police bike placed on the side opposite to the traffic.

Locals said the officer was driving on the wrong side of the road with flashing lights when Irene came out as she was heading towards the house.

Lionel Blackburn, 78, a friend of Irene said, "He's an incredibly nice person.

"I've known her for over 40 years. She did a lot of volunteer work for the church and her husband, Walter, ran the evening service.

"We were all devastated when we learned that she had been hit by the police bike.

"Irene is always smiling and cheerful.I hope she'll be back in the church soon."

Another friend said, "She is an adorable woman, we are all very worried about her."

The Independent Office of Police Conduct will investigate the accident.

The usual police procedure for royal or diplomatic convoys is maintained in the event of an incident involving a foreigner.
