A student at Bowling Green State University is in critical condition following an alleged alcohol hazing incident, which has prompted a fraternity to be provisionally suspended.
CBS Local Affiliate WBNS-TV reported that the incident took place at Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) off the Ohio school campus Thursday.
Family lawyer Sean Alto identified the student as Stone Foltz. The lawyer said ABC News Saturday that Foltz is kept alive while doctors work to donate his organs.
The international fellowship organization told ABC it was “horrified and outraged” by the incident, adding that the Bowling Green chapter had been placed under administrative suspension.
University leaders said they would meet with students to determine the long-term future of campus fraternities and sororities.
“As more details are confirmed, we will also pursue the permanent suspension of the Delta Beta chapter as well as the expulsion of all members of the International Brotherhood chapter,” said the international organization Pi Kappa Alpha, according to ABC.
The organization, in its initial statement to the media, incorrectly said Foltz was dead.
“We express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the student’s family and friends and to all affected by this tragic loss,” the statement read, which was later updated to remove any suggestions as per which Foltz had died.
Alto called the fraternity’s initial statement that Foltz died “insensitive and inappropriate.”
“The information keeps coming out, wait and gather the facts,” Alto told ABC. “It’s horrible to do this before the family. They focus only on their son, their brother, their grandson. “
A social media post from Foltz’s mother that Alto shared with the CBS subsidiary in Toledo, Ohio WTOL urged people not to promote misinformation about her son’s condition.
“Please have respect, be considerate and passionate,” she wrote. “Please do not post comments on the details of what you heard. Stone is always with us during the organ donation process. Kiss your kids and tell them how much you love them every day. “
The university has a strict anti-hazing policy which declares, “the BGSU community is unconditionally opposed to any situation intentionally created to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.
The school defines hazing as “any action or activity which has the purpose or effect of inflicting physical or mental harm, embarrassment or anxiety or which constitutes a violation of the law”, as well as ” any action or situation which, intentionally or unintentionally, endangers a student in connection with an initiation, affiliation or maintenance of membership in an organization, club, team or activity affiliated with the University. “
“It is not a defense against a violation of this policy that a person has consented to the alleged hazing activity or that the alleged hazing activity has occurred outside of University premises,” the policy adds. .
