A teenager who accidentally ingested tapeworm eggs due to unhygienic practices died as a result of parasitic worm disease.
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Indian national of Faridabad, aged 18, developed a swelling in the right eye, while he also complained of pain in the right side of the groin.
The study revealed that he had also had epileptic seizures at some point.
He underwent an MRI that revealed to his doctors at Faridabad Hospital that he had "cystic lesions" in his brain.
Practitioners Dr. Nishanth Dev and Dr. Zafar Abbas then diagnosed the adolescent with neurocysticercosis, a parasitic disease that affects the brain and the central nervous system.
"Despite treatment at the hospital, the 18-year-old died two weeks after admission to the emergency department," the paper said.
The World Health Organization warns that humans can become infected after eating undercooked foods, especially pork. or after drinking water contaminated with tapeworm eggs.
He adds that poor hygiene practices can also predispose a person to tapeworm infection.
"Once inside the host, the larvae emerge from the tapeworm eggs and crawl into the brain tissue and muscles where they accumulate and form cysts," said Dr. 39; WHO.
He added that the prevention of infection would require a wide range of interventions, including improving the safety and hygiene of food, as well as improving the diagnosis and treatment.
Doctors at Faridabad Medical College and ESIC Hospital said that the MRI of the adolescent victim had revealed "many well-defined cystic lesions in the cerebral cortex, brain stem and cerebellum, compatible with neurocysticercosis".
They decided not to treat the young man with anti-parasitic drugs because they "may aggravate the inflammation" of cerebral cysts.
"Despite treatment with dexamethasone and antiepileptic drugs, the patient died two weeks later," the doctors said.
