SINGAPORE – The 16-year-old boy who suffered cardiac arrest six days after receiving his first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech / Cominarty COVID-19 vaccine has been transferred out of the intensive care unit (ICU), the ministry said de la Santé (MOH) on Thursday (July 15).
In his response to Yahoo News Singapore When questioned by the media, the ministry said he had been transferred to a high dependency ward in the coronary care unit of the National University Hospital (NUH) for “close monitoring and observation”.
He remains stable and the health ministry is still investigating the underlying cause of his cardiac arrest, the ministry added.
“Our priority is the well-being of the patient and he is under the close medical care of an excellent team at the (NUH) and our hopes and best wishes are with him and his family for continued recovery,” said the Ministry of Health.
The boy was taking supplements and lifting weights almost twice his body at the gym when he collapsed on the morning of July 3, six days after receiving his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech / Comirnaty vaccine on June 27.
The boy was transferred that same evening to the NUH intensive care unit in critical condition from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), where he was treated for the first time.
In the same statement Thursday, the health ministry reiterated that the recent death of a 16-year-old boy, whose obituary went viral online, was unrelated to the vaccine.
The boy had not received any dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the ministry said. The obituary in question stated that the boy, born in 2005, died on July 10.
“We urge the public not to disseminate unsubstantiated information which could aggravate the grief of the family or alarm the public,” he said.
As of June 30, 12 cases of myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, or inflammation of the lining around the heart, have been reported in individuals following their vaccination with COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines approved for use in Singapore under the national program are based on mRNA technology.
Five of the cases occurred in adults aged 30 and over.
The remaining seven were in males under the age of 30, which is higher than expected for this particular age group, based on background incidence rates.
