Brazos County Confirms 16 Recorded Delta Variant Cases, Highlights Need for Vaccine

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – As cases and hospitalizations increase in the state and county, the Brazos County Health District held a press conference on Thursday.

Dr Seth Sullivan, of the Brazos County Health Authority, said there have been 16 recorded cases of the delta variant in the county, but he expects the number to actually be much higher . Determining whether a case of COVID-19 is caused by the delta variant requires additional testing that is not widely conducted.

“I estimate that 80% or more of the cases we are seeing right now are due to the delta variant,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan also pointed out that the vast majority of residents of Brazos County who find themselves hospitalized are not vaccinated, with only three breakthrough cases hospitalized to date.

So far, 52% of all people eligible for the vaccine in Brazos County are fully vaccinated, according to Sullivan, but he stressed the need for more of the community to be vaccinated.

Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is the best form of defense against serious illnesses caused by the virus. To date, 109 cases of vaccine breakthroughs have been reported in Brazos County. According to Sullivan, 87% of all COVID-19 cases reported in July were from unvaccinated people.

A total of 24,506 COVID-19 cases were reported in the county as of Thursday.

On Thursday, the health district reported 413 active cases and 31 residents of Brazos County hospitalized with COVID-19. 65 people with COVID-19 are currently in hospitals in the Brazos Valley.

This week, Brazos County and most of the Brazos Valley are at the “high” transmission level, the highest of the four ratings. A high level of transmission means new CDC guidelines that even vaccinated people should resume wearing masks indoors now apply to the county.
