Officer says truck is decorated with swastikas, symbols of white supremacy
WASHINGTON, DC (KYMA, KECY) – United States Capitol Police (USCP) confirms they arrested a man early Monday morning near the Democratic National Committee headquarters who had a bayonet and machete in his truck, both illegal in Capitol.
“It’s good police work, plain and simple,” said Chief Tom Manger. “We applaud the officers’ careful observation and the teamwork that culminated in this arrest.”
Police said it started around midnight when an officer in the Special Operations Division noticed a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, with a swastika and other white supremacist symbols painted on it.
After noticing that the truck did not have a license plate, but instead a photo of an American flag where the identification should be, officers stopped it along the 500 block of South Capitol Street, SW.
It was then that the police noticed a bayonet and a machete, among other knives. They arrested Donald Craighead, 44, of Oceanside, Calif., For possession of prohibited weapons.
Craighead himself claimed to be “on patrol,” speaking about white supremacist ideology and other white supremacist matters.
“This is a great example of the work our officers do every day,” said Jason Bell, deputy head of the Office of Operational Services. “We are so proud of these officers for their vigilance. “
The USCP’s Investigations Division is currently investigating to see if Craighead was planning to attend any upcoming protests or if it has any links to previous cases in the region.
