Strangely, the Yankees are currently playing the rope. It's not that they do not care whether they win, because home field advantage throughout the playoffs is certainly a worthy goal. Still, the most important thing the Yankees can really do at this stage is to keep their players healthy for October, while also evaluating the location of their pitchers in the post-season. For the most part, the Yankees have been successful on all these fronts today. James Paxton was solid, no one had been injured, and the Yankees had won by a score that looked a lot like the New England Patriots' record in any NFL season.
At the beginning of the game, the Yankees registered some races on the old-fashioned table; by chaining rallies. In the second, Luke Voit started the race, placed second on a Gio Urshela single and scored on Brett Gardner's double. In the third, DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge were singled out, before the double of Voit 'base rule took the Yankees' lead to 2-0.
From there, the Yankees quickly returned to their brewing style. Gardner led the third goal with a solo shot to score 3-0. They threatened to suffer further damage, while Thairo Estrada was hit by a pitch and LeMahieu was singled out, forcing Waguespack to leave the match. Brock Stewart came in and Waguespack was eliminated with a barred Judge.
In truth, as the Yankees finally made progress in this match, they did not take advantage of several chances to win the match against Waguespack. The first run of the Yankees at bat ended with a double play back, out and out. In the third period, LeMahieu was found stuck between the third and the house, and Urshela scored a double game that ends at the end of the round. Waguespack left with only three points on his line in 3.2 innings, despite nine riders.
They would not let Stewart get by without effort. Stewart hit Torres with a shot and allowed Voit to start the fourth goal, and Gardner got to the plate with two on and one on. He doubled the lead of the Yankees at once:
This marked the 25th round of Gardner's season, a new career high. He now has a .500 average in another quiet season for the 36-year-old veteran. For good measure, he added an excellent defensive game to his best day of the day, scoring a jump on Danny Jansen in the middle:
Of course, the rest of the training had to join Gardner to have fun. LeMahieu singled out in the sixth and Torres sent his 37th of the season away from Stewart. Voit followed with his own solo shot.
While the Yankees attacked Stewart, Paxton had an effective day. He struggled in the first run, as he usually did, placing two runners with a withdrawal. He fought for seven games with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before provoking an exit, and eliminated Teoscar Hernandez to avoid premature damage.
Paxton settled after his initial difficulties, only facing problems in the fifth. Brandon Drury managed a single on the field, was ranked second on a Torres throw error and scored on a pair of sack flies to give the Jays their only chance of spinning in front of Paxton. He finished with five innings and three strikeouts, after scoring two goals and giving three hits. The Blue Jays did a good job playing a long time and pushing up Paxton's throwing count, frustrating him just enough to keep him from running in the right order. Still, Paxton did his part to help win the game.
Cory Gearrin relieved Paxton in sixth place and managed to keep a total score of 9-1. Jonathan Loaisiga was then encouraging, surpassing 97 mph with his fastball and taking out two in a pair of scoreless heaps.
The Yankees added some extra points to the top of the ninth for good measure. Kyle Higashioka opened the scoring with a double by Justin Shafer, assuring that each starter scored at least one shot, and scored on an Estrada RBI single. Clint Frazier, in Judge, scored twice and Mike Ford, forked for Voit, shot a three-pointer to put the score at 13-1.
Down, the Jays finally managed their best offense of the day. Ryan Dull scored twice, one step, another double and a single to give Toronto two points, bringing the score to 13-3.
The win moves the Yankees to 98-52. They have a 9.5-game lead in the eastern part of the AL with 12 games to play. The Rays play at Anaheim at 9:07 EST, so New York's lead could be double-digit at the end of the night. You can almost feel the celebration of the end of the weekend, loaded with champagne.
