Brian Laundrie crossed the country to visit his parents’ home in Florida on his trip with Gabby Petito, according to Laundrie family lawyer Steven Bertolini. The attorney confirmed to CBS News that Laundrie returned home on August 17 and returned to Utah on August 23, 4 days before Petito was last seen.
According to Bertolini, Laundrie flew to Florida to stock up and shut down a storage unit to save money. He and Petito were considering extending their road trip, Bertolini told CBS News on Wednesday.
Laundrie returned to Florida shortly after he and Petito were arrested by police for a domestic servant contestation. Officers from the Moab, Utah Police Department arrested the couple on August 12 after a passer-by reported seeing Petito slap Laundrie, who then “grabbed her face and pushed her away.”
Officers who responded classified the incident as a mental health disruption instead of a domestic assault by either party and separated Petito and Laundrie for the night. Five days later, Laundrie flew to Florida, where he stayed with his parents for six days in Fort Lauderdale before returning to Petito.
The latest video of Petito chatted with his mother on August 23 or 24 and was last seen on August 27. On September 11, Laundrie returned home in the couple’s 2012 Ford Transit van without Petito. Petito’s family reported his disappearance the same day, triggering the nationwide hunt that ended when police discovered his body in wyoming
The initial autopsy report classified Petito’s cause of death as homicide. Laundrie was named a Person of Interest shortly after Petito went missing, and authorities are still looking for him. They think he escaped to the Carlton Reservation in Florida.
Petito’s father and mother publicly urged Laundrie to surrender.
“The laundries didn’t help us find Gabby, they sure won’t help us find Brian. For Brian, we ask you to go to the nearest FBI or law enforcement agency,” lawyer Richard Stafford said. noted at a press conference on September 28.
Laundrie’s father and mother, Chris and Roberta Laundrie, claimed they did not know where Laundrie is and did not help him escape.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie don’t know where Brian is,” the Laundrie family said in a Sept. 27 statement. “They are worried about Brian and are hoping the FBI can locate him. Speculation from the public and some in the press that the parents helped Brian leave the family home or avoid arrest on a warrant that was issued after Brian had already been missing for several days is simply not true. ”
