Examine growth trends
“We examine the growth trends of S gene target failures (SGTF) and non-SGTF case numbers at local level across England, and show that the Variant of Concern (VOC) has a higher transmissibility than the non-VOC lines, even if the VOC has a different latent period or generation time. Available data from the SGTF indicate a change in the age composition of reported cases, with a greater share of under 20s among reported VOC cases than non-VOC cases, ”the study said.
The new research, however, does not contradict previous studies which showed that the new strain did not have a higher death rate and that current vaccines would be effective against it.
