British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in an interview on Wednesday that the 2011 film “Contagion” helped influence his approach on how best to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine in the UK.

Hancock was a guest of Britain’s LBC and spoke about his decision to order enough vaccine to immunize every adult in the country. He highlighted the film and said he remembers some of the biggest challenges the characters face came when they considered who to clear first.

He said he had eliminated that concern by insisting that the country order “enough for each adult to receive their two doses.”
“But also, we asked for this clinical opinion on prioritization very early on, and put it out in public so that there wouldn’t be a big dispute over prioritization,” he said.
The Independent newspaper first reported on the interview.

The supply of vaccines is a sensitive issue in the European Union, which laments that AstraZeneca has reduced the number of doses it plans to supply to the EU in the short term.
The company said last month that it plans to cut initial deliveries within the EU from 80 million doses to 31 million doses due to reduced yields at its manufacturing plants in Europe.
Hancock said he wouldn’t say Steven Soderbergh’s film was his “primary source of advice on this matter.”
