BROCTON – As Halloween approaches, the village board has started working on their plans for this year’s vacation. This year Halloween falls on a Sunday, which can cause complications for municipalities as to when they want to organize a sleight of hand.
“We have to determine which day of the week we want it” said village clerk Scott Jagoda. “We can do it on Sunday and we have to see if the fire department does something like a parade so we can coordinate with them.”
The village council came up with the idea of having a treat on the Saturday before Halloween, October 30. Last year, Halloween hours in Brocton ran from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., but administrator Bryan Woleben suggested doing it from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to account for how quickly it’s dark. On top of that, Woleben said it’s likely more people will come to the fire hall for all of Saturday’s events.
“It doesn’t matter to me the day we hold it, but I think you would have more attendance at the Hall on a Saturday”, said Woleben. “I should call Jimmy (Rizzo) and check with him.”
Despite this, administrator Craig Miller has pleaded for the village festivities to continue on Halloween itself, which is the consensus the rest of the board reached. The question under consideration then became the organization with the fire station if they wanted to do a parade. The board said it had been a few years since the parade was over, and Woleben said the last parades that took place stopped in the middle.
“I’m going to be very honest, the last parades we did, by the time we walked down Smith Street, the kids were everywhere,” said Woleben.
With the date set for Halloween itself, the council will contact the fire department to coordinate any other festivities that may take place on that day.
