Broward schools fear less funding due to declining enrollment by the thousands

TAMARAC, Florida – Members of the Broward County School Board continued their search for missing students on Sunday.

Officials say thousands of students are not in the system due to COVID-19 issues, and it could impact the county’s funding in the near future.

According to Broward Acting Superintendent Vickie Cartwright, some parents are concerned about sending their children to school because of COVID-19.

As Broward County’s population grows, there are approximately 10,000 fewer students enrolled in public schools this year.

The low numbers prompted Broward County public schools to launch a campaign, going door-to-door to try to get children back into the school system.

Many parents have taken the virtual roads, homeschool or charter school. Fewer students means less money, with Broward already dipping into federal COVID-19 funds to avoid cutting jobs and programs.

“I had one yesterday, I had another today when it comes to parents,” Cartwright said. “What will it look like for my child inside the school? How do we protect our children from catching Covid? ‘ “

The final number of children returning to school will be finalized in the course of next week.
