CLEVELAND, Ohio – Myles Garrett took a big step on Sunday in healing lingering bad feelings from the helmet incident.
The defensive end sprinted to Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph after the Browns won, 24-22, to clinch their first playoff spot since 2002, shook hands and congratulated him.
“I just told him ‘good game,’ said Garrett. “A hell of a game. And we’ll see you next week. ”
The Browns (11-5) won a rematch with the Steelers (12-4) at Heinz Field next week.
Rudolph did his best to prevent this from happening. With 1:23 to go in the game, he sent a 2-yard touchdown pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster to bring the Steelers down to less than two points. Rudolph’s two-point pass in the end zone to Chase Claypool was incomplete.
Rudolph, during his Zoom call with Steelers reporters, confirmed what Garrett said.
“That’s all it was,” Rudolph said. “I said good luck to him, I had a lot of respect for him. ”
Rudolph, who lost to the Browns 21-7 in the “helmet game,” completed 22 of 39 attempts for 315 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a rating of 89.2. He had big 41, 41 and 47 yard passes to keep things close.
Unfortunately for the Browns, Ben Roethlisberger will start against them next week in the wild-card game. But Garrett’s move could ultimately lead to an air clearance session between him and Rudolph.
Garrett, inmate without a bag on Sunday, told cleveland.com in September that he wanted to do so, and Rudolph said this week he would be open to hearing what Garrett had to say.
Garrett thinks they can straighten things out despite Garrett saying Rudolph called it the “N” word, an accusation Rudolph denies.
