PITTSBURGH (AP) – JT Brubaker pitched five scoreless innings for his first win in nearly three months, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Brubaker (5-13) allowed four hits with six strikeouts, blocking five runners in scoring position. The 27-year-old right-hander helped Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner line up loaded bases in second and ended a threat with runners in second and third in third by removing David Peralta. In fifth, Pavin Smith got stuck in third as Carson Kelly flew to the center.
“I was focused on the next start” Brubaker said. “The last start was over, it was over. I had five, six days to get over it. … Just being able to focus on one pitch at a time really put me in a mood and groove more similar to what I was at the start of the year.
Since his last win on May 29, Brubaker has gone 0-9 with a 7.08 ERA in 12 starts.
“I think it just allows you to go home and sleep a little better at night” Pirates director Derek Shelton said. “To be able to take that win and be able to execute, I think that’s a big thing for a young pitcher. “
Pittsburgh, which is 0-9 with a chance to sweep this season, has won four of five games after winning the first two of three games against Arizona.
Chris Stratton put Arizona in order in ninth for his second save of the season.
Bumgarner (7-8), who allowed a season-high eight innings hit against Philadelphia on Aug. 19, allowed four runs on six hits in six innings.
“I don’t think it was as bad as the line looks” said Bumgarner. “It certainly wasn’t precise, but I think if I could have a few things to do it could very easily have been another one, like the last handful. “
Michael Chavis scored in his second game with the Pirates, sending the first pitch of the third inning, a Bumgarner cutter, 429 feet into the left-field bleachers for a 1-0 lead. It was his first home run since being acquired in a Boston Red Sox trade on July 30.
“I know I have the power” said Chavis. “One thing I was working on was letting this happen naturally and quitting trying to generate energy. Stop trying to force home runs. Just let them happen.
Ke’Bryan Hayes called with a triple on the right field wall and scored on a sacrificial volley from Bryan Reynolds.
Anthony Alford made it 4-0 with a two-run homer, his first of the season, in fourth. He was reinstated on the 10-day injured list on Monday after being inactive since August 12 due to a lower back injury.
Peralta scaled the left field wall, trying to bring back Alford’s blast, but came back empty in the stands. He had just deprived Kevin Newman of additional goals by making a catch while running before hitting the wall the previous one at bat.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said medical staff assured him Peralta was fine after the collision.
Ketel Marte, pinching for Peralta, brought him back to 4-2 with a two-run homerun to the left in the eighth.
“My frustration is at an all time high” Lovullo said. “I expect a lot from this team. I want them to know that. I want them to know that they can go out and gain every inch they can any night. … This group goes out every day to win baseball games. That’s all that matters to me.
SMITH HANGING
Diamondbacks LHP Caleb Smith received a 10-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for a foreign substance on his glove in the eighth inning against the Phillies on August 18. Smith has chosen to appeal and will remain on the active list until the MLB makes a decision.
TRAINERS ‘ROOM
Diamondbacks: OF Kole Calhoun worked his lower body and hit the batting cage on Monday, Lovullo said. Calhoun was placed on the 10-day injured list with left hamstring strain on August 12.
Pirates: C Henry Davis, the No.1 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, has been placed on the seven-day injured list due to a right oblique strain with High-A Greensboro.

LHP Diamondbacks Tyler Gilbert (1-1, 2.04) will take the mound for tonight’s three-game series final against a named Pirates pitcher. Gilbert allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings in his last game on August 20, after not touching any of the Padres in his first major league start on August 14.
