BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) – The Brazos County Health District says that a student of Bryan ISD is being treated for bacterial meningitis. The health district is working with Bryan ISD to investigate and offer preventive treatment to those who may have been exposed to the student.
The student, currently enrolled in Bryan ISD's Alternative Disciplinary Education Program, fell ill on Friday, April 26, 2019.
In a written statement to the media, the health district said: "The Brazos County Health District and Bryan ISD are collaborating to coordinate research on the disease and the preventive treatment of people who may have been exposed to the disease. student."
The results of the test on the student indicate that it is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis.
Meningitis caused by N. meningitidis is contagious and is transmitted through close contact through the exchange of respiratory secretions and throat, such as coughing; share utensils, food, drinks, gum and cigarettes; or kiss him. People who are considered close contacts of a person infected with N. meningitidis should receive antibiotics to prevent them from contracting the disease.
Fever, headache and stiff neck are common symptoms of bacterial meningitis. Other symptoms may include rash, nausea, vomiting, discomfort, confusion and drowsiness.
