COLUMBUS – Ryan Day gave no details on next steps in the Ohio State defense, but vowed they would steer clear of mistakes the Buckeyes made too often in a 35-28 loss to the ‘Oregon Saturday.
“We need to sort out some things. There is a lot to look at and we’ll find what gives us the best chance of winning ”, Day said Tuesday at his weekly press conference.
“We’re allowing too many yards and too many points, that’s the result. I think now it’s not just one game, it’s kind of a model. We will certainly make some adjustments to the way we tackle other offenses, but also structurally and the way we conduct our day-to-day operations ”, he said.
“We’re going to make some adjustments and changes, but I’d rather stay out of this for now. You want to take action, but you want to make sure you don’t overreact. You want to do it right. You allow people to do their jobs, but when it comes to a point, you want to make it right. “
The Ohio State No.9 (1-1) allowed Oregon 505 yards and Minnesota 408 in his two games this season after allowing 621 yards in a 52-24 loss to Alabama in from last season’s national championship game.
Next up for the No.9 Buckeyes is a 3:30 p.m. Saturday game against Tulsa (0-2).
Perhaps the most alarming statistic this season is that the OSU defense has allowed an average of 236 rushing yards per game, which ranks it 123rd nationally.
“Last year the passing game was the big problem (defensive) and we were in the top 10 in the country to stop the race. We made a few adjustments to make things right at the back and now we’re having a hard time stopping the race ”, said the day. “You have to see what the problem is. Is this the style we play? The knee-jerk reaction from some fans is that defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs, who had never been a coordinator before Day hired him last season, is the biggest issue with the Ohio State defense.
When asked if Coombs was still the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator, Day replied: “Yes, he’s still the defensive coordinator. But we’ll be looking at everything.
Day, a former college quarterback who was an offensive coordinator at three colleges and a quarterback coach in the NFL, spends most of his time with the Ohio State offense. But OSU’s defensive problems forced him to spend less time on the offense.
“I’m not happy with that at all. Part of the deal for me to do what I do on offense is that I need the defense really on point and special teams on point. I need Mark Pantoni to do a great job of recruiting and Mick Marotti to manage strength and conditioning ”, said the day. “The minute I’m taken out for this stuff, it affects the offense. To be honest with you, I am disappointed. We have good coaches, we have good players so we can understand that. But we have
ask tough questions and maybe make things uncomfortable. But it’s part of my job.
Ohio State’s next four games will be against Tulsa, Akron, Rutgers and Maryland, so improvement may be achievable.
“We’re going to take a close look at everything we do, from the plan to our structure and all of those types of things and what gives us the best chance against Tulsa to win the game. But no difficult decision has yet been taken ”, said the day.
