The Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered a huge loss to their high school when starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting suffered an elbow dislocation in their Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys, and they could aim for a big name replacement.
The defending Super Bowl champions among several teams who contacted veteran free agent Richard Sherman, via Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
Five-time Pro Bowler and one of the best stopping artists of his generation, Sherman recently played for the San Francisco 49ers after a long career with the Seattle Seahawks that included a Super Bowl ring. He’s been on the All-Pro First Team three times and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.
Perhaps more important than his playing on the field is the status of his current legal status, that Pelissero breaks:
There is also the question of Sherman current legal situation, resulting from a July incident that led to his arrest for five misdemeanors – including drunk driving and second degree criminal trespassing – after crashing his SUV in a construction area and later attempting to force the home of a family member.
The arrest was originally reported as an incident of domestic violence, but police said Sherman did not physically assault anyone; he pleaded not guilty to all charges and vowed to seek help.
A person close to Sherman said he has been doing magnetic therapy and has been speaking with a therapist since the incident, helping him with many issues he did not have the tools to tackle before. He also lost 15 pounds – the weight he put on after a torn Achilles in 2017 and held onto most of his three seasons in San Francisco.
Murphy-Bunting’s return timeline is still unclear, although it looks like he won’t need surgery. Still, Bucs head coach Bruce Arians told media earlier this week that Murphy-Bunting miss at least four weeks, and there is always the possibility that the injury will end with the end of the season.
Sherman’s size and skills would suit Tampa Bay perfectly with Todd Bowles’ defensive scheme, so this will be something Bucs fans will be watching out for in the weeks to come.
