An 88th-minute goal thwarted Minnesota Duluth’s attempt to end a season-opening losing streak on Friday, September 10, 2021, and was enough for Rockhurst to secure a 2-1 victory in non-conference women’s football at the Malosky stadium.

UMD fell behind on a goal from Elle Guttman in the 47th minute, but did not respond until 13 seconds later to tie the score on a Jacqueline Jares shot, the first of her college career. The game was held at 1-1 until Olivia Van Belle won for Rockhurst (1-2) with 2:02 to go.

Sophia Grenz made six saves for the UMD (0-3), which will start the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Friday (September 17th) against Minot State at Malosky Stadium.

Bulldogs are 2-0 when volleyball resumes

UMD had a squeaker and rash on day one of the Wisconsin-Parkside tournament Friday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The 11th-seeded Bulldogs beat Parkside 3-2 (26-28, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 16-14) on the night after sweeping across Lake Superior State 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) earlier. It was the second time in as many weeks that UMD had played at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools after beating the two in Houghton, Michigan.

Cianna Selbitschka had 26 kills for the Bulldogs and Grace Daak 10 against Parkside. Madison Gordon distributed 43 assists and Sydney Lanoue contributed 20 digs and Kate Berg 16. Selbitschka’s 26th kill broke a 14-14 tie in the fifth set and was followed by an ace serving Emma Kujawa.

Against the Lakers, the Bulldogs reached 0.286 for the game and had 14 kills from Selbitschka and 12 digs from Lanoue. Gordon totaled 33 assists.

The UMD (5-1) faces new opponents on the second day of the tournament on Saturday: Colorado Christian (12:30 p.m.) and Quincy (5 p.m.)
