From mirror reports

AKRON, Ohio – The Curve received some good news Wednesday night as promising pitcher Roansy Contreras returned to the mound after missing two months with injury.

But there wasn’t much more good news for the Curve as they lost to Akron, 9-5, at Canal Park. The RubberDucks scored five points at the Altoona reliever box in the fourth inning and took the win.

Happy to see you again

Contreras missed every July and August with a forearm injury, his last throw on June 30. He was one of the most impressive pitchers in the minor leagues in the first two months of the season, posting a 2.35 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 46 innings.

Contreras, who came to the Yankees Pirates in Jameson Taillon trade, was getting a lot of attention two months ago, with some calling for him to be promoted to triple A.

The injury cost him a good chunk of the season, but he managed to come back so he could get a handful of starts down the home stretch.

Contreras pitched a scoreless first inning, then ceded a solo homerun to Marcos Gonzalez in the second. Contreras was lifted after the second, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Great leaguer

Akron started Cleveland Indians right-hander Aaron Civale on a rehab outing. He allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in five innings, striking out six with a walk.

Civale comes back with a broken finger and should soon join the Indians.

Statistics and others

Curve reliever Osvaldo Bido (4-6) allowed seven runs – four earned – on nine hits in four innings to concede defeat.

Akron scored 20 points in the first two games of this series.

Jack Suwinski, Mason Martin and Grant Koch had two hits each for the Curve.

Brayan Rocchio went 3-for-5 for the RubberDucks.

Altoona is only three games over .500 left.
