The potential contamination of Butterball was discovered by federal and state public health officials investigating a schwarzengrund salmonella outbreak that killed five people in two states. The Wisconsin authorities took three samples of Butterball brand ground turkey from a residence where four residents had become ill.

The fifth disease occurred in Minnesota, mainly between December and January, said a spokesman for Butterball.

The recall involves a product day from a plant, the Butterball Plant in Mt. Olive, North Carolina. The 675,000-square-foot factory located outside of Raleigh is the largest turkey processing plant in the world, processing 17 million turkeys a year, according to Butterball.
