The California Department of Public Health said Thursday it would implement what officials have described as a “first in the nation” mandate that healthcare workers be fully immunized, requiring it by the next day. end of September.
The department said the vaccine’s mandate was a necessary response to “the increase in COVID-19-related hospitalizations and intensive care patients due to the highly contagious Delta variant.” The ordinance applies to workers in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities.

According to the decree, workers must receive their second dose or be fully vaccinated by September 30. The state said it would offer limited exemptions for medical or religious reasons.
Workers eligible for these exemptions should undergo weekly or bi-weekly COVID-19 testing, depending on the facility. They would also be required to wear a medical grade mask on site.
In a separate decree, public health officials said health facilities can only admit visitors who are fully vaccinated or who have tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of a visit inside the hospital. ‘a patient.

The measures were announced about a week after California Gov. Gavin Newsom said healthcare workers needed to be fully immunized or tested weekly.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a similar measure earlier this week requiring city employees to be vaccinated or tested. Nationally, President Biden has rules in place requiring federal workers to confirm they have been vaccinated or undergo weekly tests, wear a mask and respect social distancing.
