California Governor Newsom press conference interrupted with chants of ‘reminder’

California Governor Gavin Newsom was repeatedly interrupted at a press conference Wednesday with chants of “Remember Newsom!” clearly audible in the background.

The governor was making an appearance in Fresno at the city’s fairgrounds to take stock of the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss a new vaccine distribution site in the Central Valley.

While discussing the vaccine rollout, rowdy rowdy people outside the fairground could be heard shouting “Call back Newsom! Call back Newsom!”

A visibly irritated Newsom did not recognize the chant, as he continued to answer a reporter’s question about a vaccination site to be set up at Reedley College.

The Democratic governor faces a growing threat of recall which, on Wednesday, approaches the 1.5 million signatures needed to qualify for a statewide ballot. Campaign organizers have until March 10 to collect the required number of signatures.

Republicans and Democrats attributed the boost to the recall to the governor’s draconian response to the pandemic that has closed schools and closed many small businesses statewide.

In recent weeks, the governor has eased restrictions like banning outdoor dining – a move some of his critics have claimed was an attempt to crack down on the recall campaign.

Asked on Wednesday how he would respond to the allegations as well as the heckling from protesters, Newsom said he was determined to help small business owners, highlighting emergency relief efforts passed in November.

“I focus every day on opening businesses, reopening our schools, increasing the immunization rate… We are determined and committed to doing this in all regions of this state. I don’t care if you are a Democrat or a Republican. I want you to be healthy and safe. And you can live your life aloud without fear of a pandemic, and without fear of having to return to the crises and departures that this pandemic has impacted on communities all over the world. Newsom said, as the chants could be heard in the background.

Fox News made several attempts to contact Newsom’s campaign team to comment on the recall campaign, but received no response.
