MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (KCAL / KCBS) – A man in California has contracted COVID-19 after receiving both doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Health experts warn it could become more common due to the virus variants that have emerged.
Gary Michael was tested for COVID-19 on Saturday when he visited Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif., For an unrelated health problem. He then received a phone call from county health officials telling him he had tested positive.
“They told me that, yes, I am positive with the coronavirus, and they went through my symptoms and the precautions of what I should do in regards to quarantine,” Michael said.
With the pandemic underway, none of this would be out of the ordinary except for the fact that Michael received both doses of his COVID-19 vaccine. Its first Pfizer shot was on December 28, followed by a second on January 18.
Michael says his case is relatively minor. His resident girlfriend tested positive for COVID-19 five days after receiving her second dose of the vaccine.
Dr Tirso del Junco, chief medical officer at seven hospitals in Southern California, says he’s not surprised by Michael’s story.
“I think I’ve heard of six or seven unrelated cases in the last three weeks of individuals who have been vaccinated with different time frames that have tested positive, and I think we’re going to continue to see more and more. more “, del Said Junco.
These cases are among the reasons doctors are urging people to continue using face masks, whether or not they’ve been vaccinated, especially in light of newer variants of COVID-19 spreading in the community.
