Three days after the state suspended the administration of 330,000 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine due to reports of allergic reactions, California public health officials announced that there was “no scientific basis for continuing the break ”.
The previously suspect batch, Moderna 041L20A, represented one week of doses for the state. Humboldt County Public Health had 4,100 doses of this batch in its freezer and had already administered some doses to local residents, according to Dr Ian Hoffman, a public health officer.
California State epidemiologist Dr Erica Pan released the following statement Wednesday evening, advising providers that they can immediately resume use of the vaccine:
Our top priorities are to ensure that vaccines are safe and effective, and distributed fairly and efficiently.
As a precaution, we recommended that suppliers suspend the distribution of batch 41L20A of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on Sunday evening. Yesterday we convened the Western States Scientific Safety Review Task Force and other allergy and immunology specialists to review the evidence gathered. We have had further discussions with the San Diego County Department of Public Health, FDA, CDC, and the manufacturer, and have found no scientific basis to continue the break. Providers who have stopped receiving Moderna Lot 41L20A vaccine can resume immediately.
These findings should continue to give Californians confidence that vaccines are safe and effective and that the systems in place to ensure vaccine safety are rigorous and science-based. My family members who qualified to receive the vaccine as healthcare workers or because of their age have already received the COVID-19 vaccine, and I encourage all Californians to take their turn.
