LOS ANGELES – Four of the U.S. servicemen killed in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport were Marines from California. Authorities released the names of the victims on Saturday. Among them was the 23-year-old sergeant. Nicole Gee from Sacramento who posted a photo on social media last week holding a baby in her arms at the airport and said: “I love my job.” The other three California Marines killed were from Rancho Cucamonga, Indio and Norco. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif .– Firefighters faced a critical day to prevent a massive California wildfire from reaching the Lake Tahoe resort area on Saturday, fearing hot, gusty winds could fuel the stubborn fire. SENT: 420 words, photos.

EXPLAINING NATURE FIRES OR WEST FIRE CAMP

BOISE, Idaho – Empty cow pastures one day can be bustling with hundreds of firefighters the next as fire camps with colorful tent towns spring up. More than 20,000 wildland firefighters are battling some 100 large wildfires in the western United States, and trucks full of supplies and equipment are needed to keep them effective at fighting the blazes for weeks on end. CHILD OF MOUNTAIN LION ATTACKS

SAN FRANCISCO – A mountain lion who attacked a 5-year-old boy and dragged the child across his lawn in southern California has been shot and killed by a wildlife officer, authorities say. SENT: 275 words.

Health investigators across the United States are finding it nearly impossible to keep up with the deluge of new infections and conduct contact tracing efforts that were once considered a mainstay of the national pandemic response.
