California health officials are calling on COVID-19 vaccine suppliers to stop using a batch of Moderna’s vaccines after a handful of people who were inoculated at the same site all had allergic reactions.
Fewer than 10 people have reported reactions after receiving doses at a San Diego vaccination site last week, according to FOX5 San Diego.
“All appeared to experience a possible serious allergic reaction during the standard observation period – a type of adverse event that the CDC reports some people have experienced while receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccination site moved to another batch of Moderna vaccine after shutting down for a few hours, ”the California Department of Public Health said.
Petco Park’s mass vaccination site, Home of the Padres, opened Jan. 11 to deliver vaccines to healthcare workers on the state’s priority list, the station reports.
Almost a third of a million doses of the Moderna batch have been sent to 286 other vendors in the Golden State, with no further news of bad feedback.
Still, officials say prevention is better than cure.
“Out of extreme caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccines, we recommend that suppliers use other available vaccine stocks,” the press release reads.
Officials noted that there is some degree of risk to any vaccine or medical procedure, and anyone is highly unlikely to experience a negative reaction.
Moderna, the CDC, and the FDA are all reviewing the lot and hoping to hear more this week. Replacement doses are not immediately available, according to FOX5.
Federal officials previously noted that a few vaccine trial participants who had cosmetic facial fillers suffered from side effects.
