Leading California epidemiologist Dr Erica Pan said Wednesday evening that a panel’s examination of apparent allergic reactions believed to be related to a specific batch of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine had found “no basis scientific ”to continue withholding doses.
The state had received approximately 330,000 doses of the specific batch Moderna vaccine, which were distributed statewide. Seven people last week had reactions at a drive-thru clinic in San Diego, some of which involved rapid swelling. But none were anaphylaxis or life-threatening reactions, according to the Western States Scientific Safety Review Task Force.
The symptoms were severe, however, and required medical attention, Pan said previously.
She added: “Out of caution, the state has recommended healthcare providers to stop distributing the specific batch on Sunday until a review of its safety is complete. The working group said in a statement on Wednesday that it recommended that providers resume doses based on the number of people across the country who have received the vaccine from the same batch without similar reactions, as well as the immediate need for vaccination during the process. pandemic.
“These results should continue to give Californians confidence that vaccines are safe and effective, and that the systems in place to ensure vaccine safety are rigorous and science-based,” said Pan.
The task force did not identify a reason for the “higher than usual” number of reactions in San Diego. Pan said all of the people who had the reaction “are at home and well.”
The COVID-19 vaccine has specific guidelines when administering inoculations, including monitoring patients for at least 15 minutes after a dose. The observation period is longer for those with certain medical conditions.
