Can you get severe COVID if you have a lot of antibodies?

A new study suggests that antibodies may be a reliable and strong indicator of how well the COVID-19 vaccine is protecting people.

Do Antibodies Stop Severe COVID?

The study – which has not been peer-reviewed but can be read on medRxiv – suggests that antibodies can determine how well a COVID-19 vaccine prevents infection and coronavirus disease.

  • The study concluded that “binding and neutralizing antibodies correlated with COVID-19 risk and vaccine effectiveness” may protect against COVID-19 infection.

Will COVID Booster Injections Stop COVID?

According to the NPR, this study suggests that giving people a COVID-19 booster would increase antibody levels, which “would go a long way in protecting them against the coronavirus, including some of the newer and more dangerous variants.”

  • The study was mentioned during Dr.Anthony Fauci’s recent briefing presentation to the White House, appearing briefly on a slide, according to NPR.

Why the United States is adding COVID-19 booster injections

This is encouraging data as the United States prepares to release booster shots to vulnerable populations. And that adds to the growing evidence that the third injection – a booster shot that will increase the number of antibodies – may protect against COVID-19.

For example, new data from the Israeli Ministry of Health has revealed that a third dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine has improved protection against COVID-19 infections and serious illnesses, especially among those aged 60 and over, according to Reuters.

  • The third dose of the Pfizer vaccine – which was a booster for the people of Israel – gave people four times more protection against infection than two doses, according to the Washington Post.
  • And, in other positive news, the third dose provided five to six times the protection against serious illness from the coronavirus.
