The percentage of people in Canada who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 has exceeded U.S. figures, according to Canadian government data.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, 48.6 percent of Canadians have been fully immunized.
The corresponding US figure, as released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is 48.4 percent of Americans fully immunized.
Based on these percentages, 16,612,850 Canadians and 160,686,378 Americans are now fully immunized.
This week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents could be allowed to visit the country for non-essential purposes starting in mid-August.
A wider opening of Canada to fully vaccinated people from all countries is possible by the beginning of September.
The border between the United States and Canada has been closed since March 2020 by mutual agreement.
Canada also surpassed the United States in the number of people who received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, with 69.4% of citizens and residents having partial immunity to the virus.
In the United States, the number is 55.9 percent.
The percentages of people eligible for the vaccine – those aged 12 and over – are even more impressive. Up to 79.7 percent of Canadians and 65.3 percent of Americans have received a dose.
The totals of fully immunized eligible citizens are 55.8% and 56.6%, respectively, with the United States ahead of Canada.
The Biden administration failed to meet its July 4 target of 70% of Americans injected with the vaccine.
Skepticism and reluctance towards vaccines in parts of the United States has led to a surge in new infections in recent weeks, with states like Arkansas, Florida and Missouri seeing a surge in new hospitalizations . The government continues to urge all Americans to get vaccinated.
Just over a quarter (26.1%) of the world’s population has received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, according to Our World in Data, which aggregates information from national governments.
Only one percent of people in low-income countries have received a dose.
