Provincial police say 10 people have been sent to hospital, one of them airlifted with serious life-threatening injuries, after a multi-vehicle crash Thursday morning in Norfolk County.

Const. Ed Sanchuk tells 980 CFPL emergency services were called to the intersection of Highway 24 and Norfolk County Road 19 East, southwest of Brantford around 6:40 a.m.

“We are in the early stages of investigation, however it’s been determined that a pickup truck was travelling southbound on Highway 24, and was stopped and prepared to turn eastbound.”

Two other vehicles had slowed down behind the first truck, when a flatbed delivery truck rear-ended one of the vehicles causing a chain reaction, Sanchuk explained.

“The truck that was turning left was pushed into the northbound lane, and was struck by another large truck travelling southbound.”

The pbadenger of the pickup truck was airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton, while the other nine individuals were taken to hospitals with various injuries.

A periscope video that Sanchuk posted to Twitter from the scene shows the wreckage of the crash: a flatbed vehicle with a load of pipe is in a ditch next to a pickup truck with a crumpled cargo bed. Another pickup is in the roadway, near a heavily damaged black car.

The driver of the black car had to be extricated by the fire department, and Sanchuk said “officers were amazed there were no serious life-threatening injuries to that particular driver.”

Charges in the crash are pending. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, Sanchuk said he expects Highway 24 between Windham Road 3 and Norfolk County Road 19 East to be closed for several hours as technical collision investigators probe the scene.

He’s also reminding people to secure loads in their vehicles, because those loads turn into projectiles in a crash.

“We have debris everywhere,” he said.

When officers initially arrived on scene, Sanchuk said it looked like seven vehicles were involved because two others were damaged when they hit debris from the crash.
