Wally, who celebrated his 103rd birthday on Sept. 8, said, "I like to do my little bit to help heroes, like those at the Invictus Games.

"I hope to be able to help this year and sit in Wilkos.

"I hope to sell Mondays and Wednesdays for a few hours or as long as I have energy.

"I'm going to have a Poppy Call Box and then my granddaughter Emma will demolish me and drop me off the shop.

"They let me sit inside and feed me if I want a cup of tea – that's pretty good there.

I like doing it because old friends come in and it's amazing how generous people are.

"I can not wait to be there, I like it and people are so generous."

He says his best advice for staying strong at his age is that he is a teetotaler.

Wally added, "I do not drink or smoke, it's kind of boring."

Mr. Randall lived in Wing until the age of three when his father, Daniel Randall, 23, a gunner with the Royal Field Artillery, died during the First World War on November 10, 1918 – one day before the end of the conflict.

His family then moved to Leighton Buzzard to live with his grandparents.

Speaking of his war record, Wally said, "In 1942, I was armed to go to the Far East, but Singapore fell to the hands of the Japanese. I was then sent to North Africa and the Nazis brought us back to Egypt.

The poppy call began yesterday and will continue until November 11th. Wally will be a volunteer on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
