SRINAGAR, India (AP) – Three insurgents in a car fired on a patrol of Indian paramilitary soldiers on Friday in an Indian Kashmiri market, killing two people, police said. A civilian was wounded during the rebel attack in Ahabal, southern Kashmir, said top policeman SP Vaid.
Police cordoned off the area and started looking for the attackers who fled the bullets. The region lies about 70 kilometers south of Srinagar, the main city of Kashmir.
The anti-Indian sentiment is deep in Kashmir, a Himalayan territory divided between India and Pakistan but claimed by both in their entirety. The rebels have been fighting against Indian control since 1989, demanding independence or territorial mergers with Pakistan.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, a charge that Pakistan refutes.
Nearly 70,000 people were killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian military repression.
