More than 210,000 Nova Scotia Power customers do not have access to electricity and school cancellations are increasing due to a winter storm in the north and north. east of Nova Scotia.
At 0910, Nova Scotia Power reported approximately 500 outages. Many are in the Halifax area, but thousands of customers are affected, from Yarmouth to central and northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.
Nova Scotia Power spokesperson Tiffany Chase said the blackouts were mainly caused by wet, thick snow that was pushing the trees on power lines in the northeastern part of the province. She said the crews are deployed across the province.
Chase said the failures in the Halifax metropolitan area did not stem from local conditions, but rather from the operation of the company's transmission lines. She added that most of the electricity is generated in Cape Breton and pbaded on to other parts of the province.
"We are also doing everything in our power to redirect the flow of other sites to these subway customers in order to reignite them as quickly as possible," said Chase.
The following regional educational centers canceled clbades of the day:
- Regional Education Center of Annapolis Valley – West Hants. Schools are open in Annapolis and Kings counties, but the bus service is at the discretion of the drivers.
- Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Education Center.
- Regional Center of Education Chignecto-Central.
- Strait Regional Center for Education.
The Nova Scotia Community College has closed its campuses in Amherst, Cumberland, Marconi, Pictou, Strait, Truro and Wagmatcook.
Ferry service between Nova Scotia and P.E.I is closed for the day.
Flights to Sydney Airport are largely unaffected, but the Halifax Airport is experiencing cancellations and delays.
Strong winds are also expected
Environment Canada predicts that the storm will bring 20 to 25 centimeters of snow in northern and northeastern Nova Scotia, with smaller amounts expected on the north exposed coastlines. Winds up to 100 km / h are also expected.
Snow warnings are in effect for Colchester and Cumberland counties, while winter storm warnings with similar amounts of snow are in place for Antigonish and Pictou Counties.
Winter storm warnings are also in effect for Inverness (south of Mabou) and Victoria counties, and the predicted snowfall is 15 to 20 centimeters.
