Performers who sing in at least five languages are part of the diverse selection of this year's Polaris Music Prize candidates
- Arcade Fire, Daniel Caesar and Gord Downie are in the running for the Polaris Prize
to the best album of an artist or a Canadian band, whose release Antisocialites from the dream pop band Alvvays and Freudian from the Toronto R & B singer Daniel Caesar.
A number of Aboriginal artists are represented on the short list. Newcomer Jeremy Dutcher plays with recordings captured on the East Coast a century ago in the Wolastoqey language, and Snotty Nose Rez Kids rappers take the level of racism in Canada.
Projects by Quebec artists Jean-Michel Blais, Hubert Lenoir and Pierre Kwenders are also among the albums listed
. The Polaris finalists are two new recruits – US Girls and Weaves – as well as newcomers to the independent rock world Partner.
The Polaris winner will be honored on September 17th at a gala presentation held in Toronto.
