CALGRY, Alta. – Nicklas Backstrom scored the winning goal in a shootout and goaltender Pheonix Copley earned his first victory for the Washington Capitals in a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
Matt Niskanen, Jakub Vrana and T.J. Oshie also scored for Washington (5-3-2) in the morning.
Evgeny Kuznetsov scored a goal in the shootout and contributed to two goals. Captain Alex Ovechkin also had help.
Matthew Tkachuk, Travis Hamonic and Elias Lindholm responded for Calgary (5-5-1) in the regulation, losing their third straight. Johnny Gaudreau got two badists to reach a career of 200.
Sean Monahan scored for the Flames in shootout. Flames goaltender Mike Smith denied 24 of 28 shots in regulation and overtime in the loss.
Copley stopped 27 of 30 shots in regulation and overtime and four of five in the shootout for the first win of his NHL career on Saturday.
The 26-year-old from North Pole, Alta., Only played his fifth NHL game on Saturday. Copley won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals last season when he was recalled to the American Hockey League for the playoffs.
Tkachuk equalized at 18:33 of the third period, swinging a shot from Rasmus Andersson on the blue line.
The Caps took the advantage 3-2 when Niskanen managed a pbad in the traffic to beat the side of Smith's gloves at 17:03 of the second period.
The Flames even scored Lindholm's goal on the power play at 16:54 of the first period. The Swede timed a Gaudreau ice pbad for his seventh goal this season.
The Gaudreau shot deflected from Hamonic's leg at 2:42 pm for the defender's first goal in 2018-19. Hamonic missed matches two to nine with a broken jaw in the opening of the season.
The # 1 power play in the NHL was scored at 2:27 pm, when Oshie, of Washington, gave Smith the advantage after Ovechkin's wrist shot.
Kuznetsov turned the Flames business figure into a doubling. He handed the puck to Vrana, who beat the Smith stick at 9:28.
Flames forward James Neal was hit hard in the boards in the first period. He skated to the bench, favoring his left shoulder, but continued to play.
The Flames will face the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabers, New York, in back-to-back road games starting Monday.
The Caps will not play until Thursday's game in Montreal against the Canadiens.
