Russell Crowe's original had a very definitive end, at least for Crowe's Maximus.
Now, it seems that a new film is focusing on Lucius, Lucilla's son of Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus nephew.
According to Deadline, Ridley Scott has trolleys running under his company Scott Free and wants to make the next film himself.
Peter Craig would have been recruited to write the screenplay – and he has a shape to long-awaited aftermath after writing the next Top Gun: Maverick.
The report suggests that Paramount is developing the suite, with Universal giving the co-financing option.
But DreamWorks, who created the original, should not be involved.
Gladiator, released in 2000, was a huge success, including five Oscars: Best Film, Best Actor for Crowe and three others.
He was also hailed with the best film awards at the Golden Globes and BAFTA at the time.
Crowe – presumably unlikely to appear – spoke fondly of the film in an interview earlier this year.
"On the set of Gladiator, I built a relationship with [Scott] it would last forever, "says The Hot Corn.
"We felt like we were in the trenches together, gradually putting the film in place as we filmed it.
"Ridley did a job that was both epic and magical. And I remember well when he told me that the production company was wrong to think that the movie was a movie for sale to teenagers.
"He was right: after only two weeks, it was clear to everyone that the female audience was the most important.
"The film is basically an emotional journey and Maximus Decimus Meridius has given me one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
"I'm not saying that it's my favorite, but I really liked it a lot."
Gladiator 2 has no official title yet or release date.
