Teenager charged with attempted murder, four others charged following Gilbert Park stalemate – Winnipeg

Five people were charged after a stalemate of more than 12 hours in the Shaughnessy Park neighborhood on Friday.

Police said they received a call around 4:20 pm Friday about suspicious circumstances in the Gilbert Park real estate complex in the 100 block of Chudley Street.

They immediately arrested two men and tried to get in touch with others inside, without success. The police began treating this situation as an armed and barricaded situation, which was finally concluded at 16:50. without injuries.

Attempted theft

Police said three suspects left the Gilbert Park compound just after 2am with a sawed-off shotgun and planned to rob a woman.

They headed for the 400 block of Flora Avenue, where they forced access to the building, and then approached a suite where a shot was fired by the door.

A 23-year-old woman was hit in the upper body and taken to hospital in an initially unstable state, but has since been improved to become stable.

Cst. Jay Murray of the Winnipeg Police Service did not detail the injuries, but said they were permanent.

The three men then returned to the Gilbert Park complex, where police said that one of the suspects had quarreled with someone else at home and had pointed the gun on them.

Officers soon arrived and two men, including one of the suspects, were arrested. Four young people tried to leave, but the two suspects threatened them and forced them to stay inside.

All the people inside the house were finally arrested and a 12-gauge shotgun was seized.

Charges

Police said a 15-year-old would be the shooter and was charged with attempted murder as well as several counts of robbery and firearm.

Edward Kenneth Munroe, 18, and Lonny Lee Chudrick, 22, have been charged with aggravated badault and also face several counts of robbery and weaponry.

Two other teenagers, a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy, both of Winnipeg, were charged with failing to comply with a condition subscribed by a judge.

The house was known to the police and the five accused charged were also aware of it.
