The new mayor and the new Nanaimo City Council officially took office on Monday at the inaugural meeting of the city council.
Mayor Leonard Krog was seen presenting chains of responsibilities by former Mayor Bill McKay and delivered a speech.
Krog thanked all those who participated in the election and the democratic process and said that he and the new council understood the "incredible expectations" of the community.
"It's clear that this council is united around a number of things he wants to see happen," he said. "He wants the restoration of good governance; he wants peace at the town hall; he wants good relations with his workers, his employees … union, management, whatever; he wants to have the feeling in our city that we are going from the front. "
Krog said that all council members would have a voice and that he would recognize what his voice would mean as mayor.
"My only hope is that when the mayor speaks, this mayor can say with some confidence and satisfaction that the mayor is speaking on behalf of a council that has done its job, made a decision and who is ready to defend it. and justify it to the people who gave them the great honor of electing them to public office, "he said.

McKay gave advice to the new council, asking them to "help eliminate hatred," which, he said, is unproductive, and to listen carefully to others.
"You will be surprised at what you will learn," said McKay. "You will broaden your knowledge and you will be seen as a government that wants to make the best decisions for the entire community."
He told board members that he would think about it every day during their term. He added that they should celebrate collective victories and not be discouraged.
"Every day, wake up and ask yourself: what can I do to make life in my community a little better for everyone? What opportunities can I offer to all? Then put on your shoes and start your trip that day, "said McKay.
Following the speeches, council voted on a few items on the agenda, including the selection of directors from the Nanaimo Regional District. Krog and Councilors Erin Hemmens, Sheryl Armstrong, Ben Geselbracht, Tyler Brown, Jim Turley, Don Bonner, Ian Thorpe and Alternate Zeni Maartman will represent the city of Nanaimo on the RDN Board of Directors.
Monday's meeting was held at the Vancouver Island Conference Center Ballroom.
