ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ryan Getzlaf and the Anaheim Ducks seem to change things after two weeks of slump.
The Ducks earned their second win in three games Wednesday night beating the Calgary Flames 3-2. Getzlaf scored the game-winner in the third period 27 seconds after the Flames drew, even though they were outnumbered.
"We are working hard to close a few games," said Getzlaf, who scored his second winning goal of the season and 49th in his career. "It was very exciting, emotions are strong in this room."
The Ducks started the season 5-1-1, but scored just two points in their next seven games ahead of a 3-2 overtime victory over Columbus on Sunday. Anaheim sank 4-1 to Los Angeles on Tuesday, but Getzlaf said it was good to quickly get back on the ice and leave that defeat behind him.
It was not easy, though. Anaheim led 2-0 in the first but Calgary was able to tie in at six minutes of the third when Mark Jankowski stole the Brandon Montour puck in the neutral zone and propelled it just over Ryan Miller's glove then that it led to two.
The Ducks, however, were quickly able to regain their momentum. Getzlaf recovered a loose puck in front and had a setback in Mike Smith's legs to break the Flames' four-game winning streak.
"In the end, we messed up in the third period and found a solution," said Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle. "I thought we had taken the right path, we did not want to sit down and worry about what happened last night, it was more about being in the present."
Jakob Silfverberg and Adam Henrique also scored for Anaheim. Miller made 37 saves and tied Andy Moog (372) to finish 17th in career standings.
"It's a guardian I've seen grow," Miller said. "I had always tried to pull his helmet all the time on my street hockey helmet – it's pretty cool to play long enough to win enough games to be mentioned." . "
Calgary drew Smith for an extra skater with a time remaining of 2:28, then was on the power play for the final 74 seconds after Rickard Rakell was called for a free kick. But the Flames never managed a net shot on goal despite the advantage of two men.
"We looked nice but I thought we needed to do a bit more offense," said Calgary coach Bill Peters. "I enjoyed our third period but we ended up chasing the match here today."
Matthew Tkachuk also scored for Calgary, who has won only once in his last 28 trips to Anaheim. Smith stopped 21 shots.
The Ducks came on the board at 8:37 of the first when Silfverberg took the puck to the Calgary area and scored a shot for his fifth goal of the season. Three minutes later, Henrique gave them a two-goal lead by grabbing a rebound after Smith stopped Josh Manson's shot from getting close to the blue line.
With less than three minutes to go in the first game, Calgary scored a power play when Tkachuk hijacked Elias Lindholm's ball to Miller.
NOTES: Anaheim D Jacob Larsson got a pbad for Silfverberg's goal for his first point in the NHL.
