TORONTO – The Ubisoft Quebec developers behind "Assbadin & # 39; s Creed Odyssey" wanted the game to be a matter of choice, allowing players to develop their characters and chart their own course in ancient Greece.

For actor Michael Antonakos, who plays the main character Alexios, it was a multi-faceted performance.

The Assbadin & # 39; s Creed franchise has traveled the time and the world. Ancient Greece was chosen for this edition precisely because of the options offered, according to the director of the game, Scott Phillips.

"It was just a big world of contrasts that allowed the player to choose between many options," he said.

"And culturally, it has a great significance because so much of what we see in our Western history today comes from ancient Greece," said Narration Director Melissa MacCoubrey.

The game takes place in the 5th century BC during the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. Players play a Spartan blood mercenary.

The franchise opened with the release in 2017 of "Assbadin's Creed Origins", offering gamers more opportunities, more options in the game and history, "a said Phillips.

"For us on Odyssey, we looked at what Origins was doing … We knew what they were doing, we knew where we wanted to go because we wanted to push it as far as possible from the RPG territory," said Phillips.

The idea was to advance the franchise, to connect players to the world in which they were abandoned.

"I think it's definitely the biggest game ever created by Ubisoft in terms of the amount of content," Phillips said.

Players can choose to play the game as a male or female character. Melissanthi Mahut, like Antonakos, a Canadian-Greek, plays the female lead Kbadandra.

"We had to mimic the performances of each other," said Antonakos. "One of us would go first and the other would follow, then we would change scene for each scene we did."

Antonakos, 36, calls Mahut "an extraordinary partner who has become a great friend". While both characters had their unique masculine and feminine traits, the actors shared reviews and notes on how their character would act and react over their thousands of lines.

"We always got together to build the character as one," he said.

"We would come back all the time," he added. "It was an incredible experience I had never experienced before as an actor, it was fascinating to do it and let it go so well."

Antonakos also paid tribute to the game's authors for helping them understand their character and their background, whether in recording studios or motion capture.

The developers went to Greece and used historians to guarantee the accuracy of the game.

While Ubisoft Quebec was the lead developer, the game benefited from the help of partner studios from around the world, including Montreal, Singapore, Bucharest, Chengdu (China), Montpellier (France), Kiev (Ukraine), Shanghai and Pune (India).

"Assbadin's Creed Odyssey," rated M for Mature, is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
