So why was Kings winger Ilya Kovalchuk stuck in the third period against the Edmonton Oilers at Staples Center on Sunday? He was not on the ice for the 5:55 finals of the second period.
His ice time in the Kings 5-2 win was 6:20, the lowest of the season. The only rookie of the Kings with less time on ice is rookie Michael Amadio (4:59). For comparison purposes, Kyle Clifford and Nate Thompson earned ice time of 12:42 and 1:23 respectively against the Oilers.
Kovalchuk was seen punching his teammates and celebrating his goals despite the fact that he sat at the end of the bench. It was a rare sight because it had never happened to him before.
